Presentation Reflections

Chapter 3: Intercultural Communication was an intriguing chapter presented by group 1. The chapter defined culture as a system of of shared values, beliefs, and norms that guides a number of people. It covers the different type of cultures, the differences between cultures and how to better communicate with someone from a differing culture. Common potential barriers to effective intercultural communications include anxiety, assumptions, ethnocentrism, stereotyping, and incompatible norms and values. The common strategies to overcome those barriers are to acquire accurate knowledge, adopt an appropriate attitude, and developing culture-centered skills.

Chapter 9: Communicating in groups was an informative chapter presented by group 2. It informs you how to identify different types of groups, describe the healthy characteristics of healthy groups, explain the stages through which groups develop, and employ strategies to manage group conflicts effectively. Group 2 explained the importance of having a healthy relationship with the members of your group and the different types of groups there are. Some characteristics of healthy groups are to have an ethical goal, be interdependent and cohesive, develop and abide by productive norms, being synergetic and accountable. They talked about the types of conflicts that can be found in groups, such as, pseudo-conflict, issue-related group conflict, and personality-related group conflict.

Chapter 10: Group leadership and problem solving was presented by group 3. They explained how leadership functions in a team, described how to run effective meetings, the six steps of systemic problem solving, how to communicate group solutions, and evaluate group effectiveness. Leadership is described as a process where a person influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal. A formal leader is a person designated to facilitate the group process and the informal emergent leaders are members who help lead the group. They covered the type of rolls different members may hold in shared leadership functions and the responsibilities that come with shared leadership.
